Abbreviations are shortened forms of words. You probably use abbreviations every day when you address your teachers. Some common abbreviations for titles include:

• Mrs.

• Ms.

• Dr.

Abbreviations are also used for calendar words, such as days of the week or months.

• Jan. (January)

• Oct. (October)

• Mon. (Monday)

• Fri. (Friday)

Finally, address words can be abbreviated.
