Roots and Affixes

Affixes are word elements that are attached to a stem, base, or root word.

  • Prefixes: a type of affix which is added to the beginning of words (for example, un-, mis-, dis-, non-)

  • Suffixes: a type of affix which is added to the end of words (for example, -ship, -ly, -er, -est)

Prefix Examples

pre - before

  • preview = to view something beforehand

  • prepare = to get ready for something beforehand

re - again

  • replay = to play something again

  • return = to come back again

Suffix Examples

less - without

  • careless - without care

  • fearless - without fear

ful - full of

  • powerful - full of power

  • doubtful - full of doubt
