  • each has its unique geographic features - mountains, deserts, plains, valleys, forests, etc.

Africa:

  • Nile River: The longest river in the world (6,695 km)

  • Atlas Mountains: Northwest Africa, separate the coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea (north of Africa) and the Atlantic Ocean (west of Africa) from the Sahara Desert

  • Sahara Desert: The largest hot desert in the world

  • Kalahari Desert- southwest Africa

Asia:

  • Huang He River: Flows through much of China

  • Yangtze River

  • Himalaya Mountains: Home to some of highest peaks on Earth (example: Mt. Everest)

  • Gobi Desert: Asia’s largest desert

  • Ural Mountains: Separates Asia and Europe

Europe:

  • Mediterranean Sea: An intercontinental sea situated between Europe, Africa, and Asia

  • Alps Mountains: The largest mountain system in Europe

  • Italian Peninsula: A boot-shaped peninsula in southern Europe extending into the Mediterranean Sea

North America:

  • Mississippi River: One of the longest rivers in North America

  • Rio Grande: Marks part of the boundary between Mexico and the United States

  • Rocky Mountains: Located in western North America

  • Appalachian Mountains: Located in eastern North America

  • Great Lakes: A series of interconnected freshwater lakes located in northeastern North America (5 total)

North America:

  • The higher, eastern side of Antarctica is colder than the lower west and the peninsula of Graham Land is the warmest region

  • Very little rainfall, but heavy snowfall

Australia:

  • Also known as Australasia/Oceania

  • Flattest and smallest continent – 8,112,000 km²

  • Highest point is Mount Wilhelm (4509 m) in Papua New Guinea

  • Longest river is the Darling river (2,739 km) which is a tributary of the Murray river in Australia
